Shotgun Fruiting Chambers



Preparation, Construction (Summary) and Creation

Beginning,
¼ inch holes should be drilled 3-5cm apart in a grid-like triangular offset pattern, looking similar to a wave

– every hole approximately having another hole drilled 1.5cm-3cm further along this same distance but instead up one layer, 3cm-5cm, dependent on the size of the chamber/bin used.

Larger bins require sometimes larger holes but less, smaller sometimes but more; but all holes start approximately 1/8th – 1/6th of the way up the box, just slightly above the perlite line to be described.

Perlite

Perlite acts as the growing platform for mycelium and should be filled approximately 1/8th – 1/6th of the way up the tub when the above and below described process is complete:

Perlite is initially to be colander’ed or strained with tap water into a transfer container at a ratio of 1:10 chamber volume with the approximate height of the chamber to be used.

This then, now filtered perlite, is to be strained again into another transfer container with tap water added to the perlite at a ratio of 1:3, respectively, and the slightest coating of hydrogen peroxide to eliminate exterior possibility of contaminate throughout the bottom layer of the fruiting chamber, but not so much as enough to affect the mycelial growth; added at a ratio of 1:300, respectively.

Perlite is then to be evenly distributed amongst the bottom of the fruiting chamber to be used, showcasing some moisture retention (in the long run) and allowing cakes to be kept sterile by a final, thin layer of perlite coated on top.

  • Additional perlite is to be added to the top of the moist perlite; as this is to be wettened when the chamber is sprayed daily when necessary, possibly after each flush but sometimes sooner.

  • Water may also be added additionally to the perlite to moisten further and ensure humidification conditions are met in the chamber.


Usage and Utilization of the SGFC

Based on trial and error, and conducted pre-birth to determine what works best for the humidity and temperature factors at play in the surroundings environment; a chamber maintaining 55-60% ambient air humidity dry humidified, can reach 70% with added perlite when birthing, up to an additional 5% with moisture from birthed cakes, and an additional 10-15% from misting being possible for 4-6 hours and up to 8 hours at 50% humidity [7% from 6-10 hours].

Math. I get it. It hurts the head. However, know you should fear not if a low humidity initially starts in a chamber for there are a plethora of ways it can and will rise over time.


Final Set-Up

Lighting shall be set so as not to shine directly on the chamber to be used but rather indirectly approximately 45°.

Full Spectrum 6500k T5 fixtures are the best source bulb to be used.

The chamber is to be pre sanitized and sterilized before usage, of course.

After appropriate airflow, lighting, humidity, and temperature is setup, the chamber is ready for use, and a mushroom environment created!
